Suzi Appel is an Australian photographer who is turning heads in the Interiors Industry with her crisp, considered and on-point photography.
She is gathering a loyal following amongst some of Australia’s acclaimed Interiors Designers & her work is being showcased in some of Australia’s most loved magazines and lifestyle websites. She specialises in photographing Interiors, Lifestyle, Products and People.
Her background is in Visual Arts & Photography education. After having children, she decided it was ‘the right time‘ to follow her instinct, and pursued her passion of running her own photography business, that was in 2014, and she hasn’t looked back!
She told me that she has ‘been fortunate to meet incredibly talented, creative people and have the support of family and friends to make this happen.’ … close support is so important to make it work, as well as having a determined attitude!
Suzi is a well respected photographer in the areas of the Interior Design world with many of her images being shared on websites such as Houzz, and also inside the pages of Australia’s favourite Interior magazines we all love. Admitting she loves to ‘create and capture, a fun, lighthearted, naturally lit scene with some creative input is exciting for me’, she also admits to really loving to shoot lifestyle photography.
As a self confessed perfectionist in her field, it is so important for her to get ‘that right shot’ … she loves the satisfaction of creating beautiful imagery for her clients.
Recently Suzi has released a small limited edition print range to compliment her editorial portfolios … it’s just stunning and we are giving a beautiful print away on the blog … (details below).
“I have always made art relating to my experiences. Digital photography and technology is something I wanted to explore for my own interest. Living by the sea is very much part of who I am, and can’t imagine not seeing water on a daily basis, so this was the first part of the image. Appreciating the Pop -Art movement and the “screenprint” aesthetic I wanted to layer my imagery with graphics and basic geometric shapes. I wanted more than a landscape but a response to it – beach, fun, summer, colour. Things that make me feel happy,” Suzi shares with me.
Suzi loves to create editorial work for ‘Houzz Australia’. She interviews and photographs such interesting people in their homes, something she really enjoys! A recent shoot Suzi completed was the home of Rebecca Astrinakis – co-founder of Nathan + Jac (who I have featured on my blog here) … she said that this was an incredible experience.
A typical day for Suzi getting ready for a shoot entails being highly organised : equipment to go , a running sheet or schedule of the day, communication with her clients and other professionals on the job are imperative for everything to run smoothly. She loves the creative energy that can be brought to a location, studio or situation … a different office every day!
I aksed Suzi to answer a few quick questions for me to get to know her a bit better …

Do you have any tips for business success …
I think having a “work hard” attitude from my Dad has helped me, and positive communication is important. Understanding to switch off/disconnect can do a lot to rejuvenate me and my creativity.
What is your favourite day of the week … Saturday , because I know there’s Sunday too!
What is your dream holiday destination … I have a few…. one is Africa.
What has been our biggest ‘pinch me’ moment since starting your business… Having a well-known photographer, I respect, refer a client to me for photography, as well as recently having large feature in a National Interiors magazine.
The best advice you’ve ever received is … Believe in yourself, do more of what makes you happy, be grateful for every day – to para-phrase Lisa Messenger.
Your ultimate indulgence is … A sleep in on the weekend and a leisurely breakfast (in the sun preferably) with my family.
