I am thrilled to share that I have partnered with Inside Out Magazine to share with you an ‘Open For Inspection’ of the stunning home renovation completed by Darren & Deanne Jolly, in Kew East, Vic. A personal guided tour by owner Deanne Jolly, Claire Bradley (Editor of Inside Out) and the team from Hisense Australia (showcasing us their new range of appliances and electronics in this beautiful luxury home) … was a lovely way to spend the morning.
The home is set on a beautiful quiet tree lined street, not far from the hustle and bustle of the east East Kew shopping precinct. Once an original worker’s cottage, it was the old story … the worst house in a great street … the home had been derelict for years prior to the Jolly’s taking possession for their renovation project. Since appearing on ‘The Block’ the Jolly’s have started a new venture, a builder – renovation outfit called ‘D+D Home’. For this particular project they engaged Architect Jane Merrylees, to create a standout property. The result; a four-bedroom plus study, three-bathroom home, a light-filled open-plan kitchen, living, casual dining area overlooking a landscaped pool, rear deck and beautifully designed rear garden … the perfect family home.
We all know Deanne knows what she wants, something I love … a woman who is strong in ideas and isn’t afraid to say ‘no’ if something doesn’t look right. Darren is also a perfectionist, so they are the prefect match with their new business. Once they purchased the house the planning stage happened very, very quickly. Deanne was off sourcing those ‘signature’ bespoke elements and Darren was working on clearing the home to start the renovation.
They wanted to create a modern family home that had multiple living zones, a fabulous outdoor entertaining area, privacy from neighbours, and most importantly the home was to be an ‘entertainer’ that could be enjoyed at any time of the year. The design has been carefully thought through, with emphasis on a ‘connected style’ from the minute you walk through the front fence of the property, they have achieved this ten fold. Custom cabinetry has been installed in a formal lounge room at the front of the home, featuring ‘Made Measure’ handles, which are also carried throughout the home, along with black door furniture & hinges … it’s those little details that I was so impressed with.
Their kitchen / living area almost left me speechless! It is positioned at the end of a hallway, offset to the main house, I absolutely loved this design aspect! It is a perfect multi zone space. Huge feature structural beams finish the spectacular ceiling, which were guided into place under the watchful eye of Darren, the beams ‘complete’ this space perfectly. These strong design elements are softened with Deanne’s selection of beautiful linen curtains which were flowing in the wind when I visited. Natural light has been used thought the home in so many cleaver ways with the high ceilings, skylights in the kitchen, hallway and bathrooms, along with large bi-fold doors to the outdoor area.
The kitchen is perfectly proportioned in the rear of the home, with my favourite feature being the Calcutta marble island bench, with waterfall sides … as well all know the kitchen is the ‘hub’ of the house and a big island bench is mandatory in my opinion!
Large mint pendants from Mud Australia installed above the island bench are the perfect touch of colour to an otherwise white kitchen. I was also memorised by an oversized pendant from House of Orange which was placed over the dinging table … this was mind-blowing! A calm colour palette has been carried throughout the home beautifully, with more ‘dramatic’ colour being reserved for the master ensuite, a black herringbone tile, and a striking Zuster vanity … I love a bit of luxury in the ensuite. My favourite Dulux colours featured it the home were ‘Waltzing’ & ‘Tranquil Retreat’.
Deanne features ‘I Love Linen’, linen and bedding throughout the home and admits this brand to be a favourite of hers. The guest bedroom also featured a stunning Hale Mercantile Co. bedhead in linen, which complimented the custom Porcelain Bear bedside wall lights ( how incurable are they …) which also features thought the home in the form of pendant and wall lights. The powder room is an entirely different look from all other ‘wet areas’ within the home. ‘Seagrass’ wallpaper from Boyd Blue brings a textured layer to this room, along with the round wall hangings as featured artwork.
This outdoor area was carefully planned by the Jolly’s with one of the main feature, retaining the feature gum tree which the deck was built around. We were told be Deanne, that when the tree is up lit at night it looks amazing … even the neighbours have this to enjoy as well! The pool views can be enjoyed from multiple rooms in the home, a feature I love. The master bedroom also opens up to this outdoor area with pool views and catches the beautiful morning sun … a idea I will be including in my next renovation project! The inclusion of a glass pool fence makes this are almost ‘uninterrupted’ when sitting in outdoor pergola covered entertaining area.
Darren & Deanne, you have constructed a luxury family home which ticks so many boxes … I cant wait to see your next project!
